To start off with I have tried to publish this 3 times, now I'm getting frustrated because it is a long one. Here goes.
While we were in Whitehorse we visited the fish ladder this is where the fish are able to go upstream to the spawning grounds to get by the power dam. Then we saw the boat the SS Klondike, this was a paddlewheeler used on the Yukon river.
We then decided to go to Carcross to visit a native settlement this is where the White Pass train comes up from Skagway, it follows the canyon where the prospectors came up thinking it an easier way to get to the gold fields, it turned out it wasn't the way to go their packhorses died as did many prospectors.
We then carried on to Skagway where 3 cruise ships were in lots of people, we visited around and did some shopping. After the cruise ships left we went for dinner, so much more peaceful.
Went up to Dyea on this very bumpy road we rocked and rolled all the way, this is the place where the prospectors started their climb to the chilcoot, this was a treck across the mountains with their wears on their back.
We stayed here in Dyea for the night.
Left this am to go back to Whitehorse, picked up a few groceries and carried on to the Klondike Hwy heading to Dawson. We stopped at the Takhini hot springs very refreshing. Made supper there and carried on to Braeburn lodge where we got the biggest cinnamon bun, then down the road a few km to the river for the night.
Next morning we headed out again and stopped at Carmacks and Pelly crossing got 2 more stamps for the passport.
We have only seen 1 bear and 1 elk in the past 3 days not good sightings around here.
We arrived in Dawson June 6 in the evening, when I got there I called a friend that we had met in 1998 he took us then to a friend of his claim, I was hoping that we could go there again but he had a tragic accident his name was Jerry, he was on his way to town on his quad when he tried to cross the river which was very high and it took him, they found him 3 days later.
He had just bought a claim #33 which was a tourist spot, so after the accident his friend bought it and is running it, she brought many of his artifacts from his place on the mountain even his shack and workshop,
We spent some time there visiting and exchanging stories of Jerry, we decided to try our hand at panning Sylvia was very nice and showed us how to do it right. When we went to pay she would not accept payment she said it was in memory of Jerry. Thanks Sylvia.
Anyway John told us he was going into the mountains the next morning at 4:30 to deliver a D10 cat to the Hoffman mine these are the brothers on Gold Rush the TV series, they sure are not liked around here. We went with him it took 3 hrs to get there but the ride and scenery was beautiful glad we went even if it was that early.
Back in town we went and did the duties emptying and filling tanks and doing laundry.
In the afternoon we went to the Commissioners garden party and had afternoon tea very nice and the ladies were all in their finarie beautiful afternoon.
After this we went up the Dome road to see Dawson from up there beautiful scenery, then off to see the dredge.
