Soldatna

Sunday was fathers day and my friend Rita who I am travelling with has a  birthday. We spent some time in Anchorage at the market, the one they have here is huge, anything and everything. I  went to the visitors center to get a tide book wanted to find out about the bore tide, it would come up Turnagain Arm around 7:00 pm  So we made our plans to go there.
First we had to go for supper went to Sourdough mining camp.  Last time I was here they had a show before dinner, this time the show is only Tue to Sat, missed it but the meal was delicious, Rita even got serenaded to.

Down to Turnagain Arm went quite a way down and saw people out on surfboards waiting for the bore, it was quite neat to see, one of the surfers had a friend who had a drone camera filming him, that was quite different.  Stayed there for the night.

Next morning we went to Portage glacier, the weather was awful lots of rain, we did take the van  thru the tunnel where the train goes it is about 11/2 miles long you drive on the tracks quite different.
Looked around for a couple of hours in the rain, they sure have cleaned this place up.  Last time I was here it had garbage all over terrible place, nice to see it now.

Spent some time at the visitors center saw a film about the glacier and the great earthquake. This glacier has receded so much that you can only see a little of it from the road.  This is a tidewater glacier.

Left here and went on our way to Soldatna on the way we saw people fishing the Russian river quite a few people there but not quite combat fishing yet.

Arrived at Fred Meyers around 3:30pm this is a great big store has everything you can think of.  Wanted to get on line here but the power was out.  We were told it was out from Anchorage to Homer about 350 miles.  We had supper here and heard on the radio there was power in Kenai so we headed there and stayed the night at Walmart.

This morning we drove further down and stopped to see an old Russian Orthodox church very interesting, then on to Nikiski to see the view across Cook Inlet, the rain has stopped this morning and the sun has finally come out Rita has finally taken her hoody off.

Now we are back at Fred Meyer to use the internet, but first had tanks to clean, and it happens to all of us Rvers at one time the hose wasn't connected well enough, you guessed it, got it all over, oh well have to be more careful next time.  Filled up with water and now here we are going to make lunch and get on our way toward Homer.
